Petit Hotel Pilitas is at Calle Pilitas 174, in the heart of the Zona Romántica, the old part of Puerto Vallarta south of the Cuale River. Calle Olas Altas, with its restaurants and bars, is a minute away; Playa de los Muertos and its sail-shaped pier are two or three minutes on foot. The Malecón and downtown are about 2 km north, a pleasant walk along the water or a short taxi ride. You may still see it listed under its former name, Hotel Hacienda de Vallarta Pilitas.
It's a three-star for adults only and LGBTQ+ friendly, built around a courtyard with a pool and a hot tub, with a rooftop terrace that looks out to sea. Guests rate the staff highly (9.2 on Expedia) along with cleanliness (9.0), and many mention how quiet it is for such a central spot. The building is not new: reviews also point to rooms that could use some upkeep, so think of it as a simple, well-located place rather than a boutique hotel.

South of the Cuale River is the old Vallarta of cobblestone streets, galleries, taco stands and bars. Playa de los Muertos is the liveliest beach in town, and its sail-shaped pier is where water taxis leave for the south shore.

Downtown's seafront promenade: a little over a kilometer of bronze sculptures, street performers, ice-cream stands and restaurants looking out over the bay. At sunset it fills up with people out for a stroll.

The crowned bell tower is Puerto Vallarta's landmark and can be seen from almost anywhere downtown. From December 1 to 12, pilgrimages for the Guadalupe festival fill the streets with music and dancers.

A national park at the mouth of the bay, about an hour away by boat: seabirds, snorkeling over the reefs and the famous Hidden Beach inside a crater, with limited access and a daily visitor cap.

Fishing villages with no road access, tucked between jungle and sea: Yelapa, Las Ánimas and Quimixto are reached by boat from the Los Muertos pier or from Boca de Tomatlán. Yelapa has a waterfall a short walk from the beach.
